Comments/Trivia
  • Possibly the least popular Jem doll.
  • He tends to get "greasy" in the face, probably due to the vinyl breaking down.
  • I used to write that he was Hispanic, now I'm not so sure, given that Christy Marx has not defined him as such; "I never specified an ethnicity for Rio, and he certainly was NOT set out as Puerto Rican. If anything, he might have some Hispanic blood a couple generations back mixed with who-knows-what." -from TrulyOutrageousJem, digest # 2121)  Which doesn't necessarily mean the *doll* isn't Hispanic... but you gotta wonder about that tan if he's not!
Produced Variants So far, I know of dolls marked on their backs with one of the following places of manufacture, and there are slight variations among them:
  • Hong Kong

12 1/2" doll; Male doll. A loose Glitter 'n Gold Rio can be differentiated from Original Rio by his shorter, darker purple hair.

Rio "glitter" outfit (jacket); Tailed tuxedo jacket, mostly gold lamé with a white satin collar. It has four faux-pearl buttons in front, covering the velcro closure.

Rio "glitter" outfit (dickie); white satin with a gold lamé bow tie. It velcros behind his neck.

Rio "glitter" outfit (pants); white velveteen, the same as Glitter 'n Gold Jerrica's skirt (and impossible to keep clean, sigh!) with gold piping down the side seams. The "belt" is attached gold lamé. It velcros up in the back.

flower for JEM; (note it isn't for Jerrica!) a rather generic looking silk rose.

sneakers; white with circle tread on bottoms.
  • thicker and less flexible than those from Truly Outrageous. (compare)

hairpick The combs mine came with were a darker iridescent gold than my Glitter 'n Gold Jem, but I'm not sure if that's always the case.

"gold" sunglasses
cassette tape One side has gold mylar label with black writing, other side has white label with gold writing. Side A: Glitter 'N Gold Rio- "Glitter 'n Gold Theme Song", "People Who Care", "Puttin' It All Together"
Side B: Glitter 'N Gold Rio-  - Jem Instrumental"

figure stand; His stand is clear with gold speckles (can be either large speckles or tiny speckles), his leg stand is particular to him as it's shorter and fatter than the females' are. The base is basically the same as the one from Glitter 'n Gold Jem.
