The Beginning
Episode Synopsis
The very first Jem episode. Starts with Jerrica retelling the story of her group's meteoric rise to fame. After the death of Emmett Benton - chiefly a scientist but also the former head of Starlight Music- his daughters, Jerrica, Kimber have to find some means of support for themselves and Starlight House, a foster home for girls. A mysterious being introduces herself to the girls and their two friends/foster sisters, Aja & Shana, as Synergy, a super computer capable of creating & projecting fantastic audio and visual holograms through a pair of earrings, left to Jerrica by her late father. Aside from Synergy, the girls have been left enough gear to start a dozen rock groups.
At Starlight Music, Jerrica discovers her father's protégé, Eric Raymond has taken control and plans to market a bad-girl group called The Misfits. Jerrica bets Eric that she can make her band more successful than The Misfits. The winner gets Starlight Music, a movie contract & a mansion.
Cartoon wardrobe trivia:
Many of the outfits shown in the first five episodes (also known as the "Truly Outrageous movie" or the Super Saturday/Super Sunday 7 minute clips) were fashions that were produced in the mid 1980's by Hasbro, such as the original outfits the dolls were sold with, Flip Side Fashions, On Stage Fashions, Smashin' Fashions, as well the Rockin' Roadster. The instruments have very little resemblance to those packaged with the dolls; indeed Shana, who is the drummer on the cartoon for the first 27 or so episodes, has only ever been sold with a guitar.
Some of these first five episode cartoon fashions - most obviously Jerrica and Roxy's fashions - were altered for later episodes, possibly due to a studio change, more likely because the designers had more detailed & updated photographs &/or actual dolls & fashions to reproduce in cartoon form.
Aja Original Outfit
First appears in The Beginning and again in: Disaster, Kimber's Rebellion, Frame Up, Battle of the Bands.
After this point the outfit changes slightly - the top becomes more form-fitting with a slightly puckered neckline, the skirt loses the snakeskin pattern, and the sandals become pumps: Starbright Part 1: Falling Star, Starbright Part 2: Colliding Stars, Starbright Part 3: Rising Star, The World Hunger Shindig, Adventure in China, The Music Awards Part 1, Broadway Magic, In Search of the Stolen Album, The Princess and the Singer, The Jem Jam Part 1, Culture Clash, The Talent Search Part 1, Scandal, The Treasure Hunt, The Day the Music Died.
Model sheet number A-1. Has also been referred to as A-20.
Hasbro produced this doll & fashion. The cartoon had to scale back a little on the shiny textures and details, but other than the shoes looking like sandals on the show, it's pretty faithful.
Integrity produced this doll & FashionIntegrity Toys drew inspiration from both the Hasbro dolls and the cartoon fashion to come up with their version of Aja Leith's original gear. Overall, both the hair and doll's fashion look a little darker to me than the cartoon version.
Shana Original Outfit
First appears in The Beginning and again in: Disaster, Kimber's Rebellion, Frame Up, Battle of the Bands.
After this point the outfit changes slightly (the sandals become pumps, most notably) and is seen in the following episodes: Starbright Part 1: Falling Star, Starbright Part 2: Colliding Stars, Starbright Part 3: Rising Star, The World Hunger Shindig, Adventure in China, The Music Awards Part 1, Broadway Magic, In Search of the Stolen Album, The Princess and the Singer, The Jem Jam Part 1, Culture Clash, The Talent Search Part 1, Scandal, The Treasure Hunt, The Day the Music Died.
Model sheet number Unknown. Probably SH-1
Hasbro produced this doll & fashion. Looks pretty much like the doll, missing the hairbow; the cartoon shoes are white sandals, not lavender pumps. She is also shown with earrings which the doll did not have. The make up scheme is completely different and the doll generally doesn't have football-shaped hair either ;)
Integrity produced this doll & FashionIntegrity's make up scheme looks more like that of the cartoon; her hair tends to be longer than the cartoon would suggest. Integrity chose to skip the hairbow (again like the cartoon), give her some tights and again swap out the sandals for pumps. The earrings are also smaller.
Kimber Original Outfit
First appears in The Beginning and again in: Disaster, Kimber's Rebellion, Frame Up, Battle of the Bands
After this point the outfit changes slightly (the sandals become pumps, most notably) and is seen in the following episodes: Starbright Part 1: Falling Star, Starbright Part 2: Colliding Stars, Starbright Part 3: Rising Star, The World Hunger Shindig, Adventure in China, The Music Awards Part 1, Broadway Magic, In Search of the Stolen Album, The Princess and the Singer, The Jem Jam Part 1, Culture Clash, The Talent Search Part 1, Scandal, The Bands Break Up, The Treasure Hunt, The Day the Music Died.
Model sheet number K-1
Hasbro produced this doll & fashion. Her outfit is pretty faithful to the doll's, the lapels being the main difference, as well as the shoes -they seem to be slides in the first five episodes of the cartoon.
Integrity produced this doll & FashionIntegrity created a more realistic jacket & blouse combination, they opted for an acid wash style finish for her pants, gave her mesh socks like the doll and again opted for pumps rather than mules.
Additional Trivia

Jem Original Outfit
First appears in The Beginning and again in: Disaster, Kimber's Rebellion, Frame Up, Battle of the Bands.
At which point it is replaced by a more faithful reproduction of the doll's outfit.
Model sheet number J-1
Hasbro produced this doll & fashion. The first Jem fashion shows a dark pink belt and red bracelet, otherwise it's fairly faithful to the produced doll. The hair is always shown completely cotton candy pink on the cartoon, the real doll was mostly blonde with a small section of pale pink hair. The eye make up is also a lot less extreme on the doll. The 1st edition doll's earrings were usually plain red bulbs, though some had star-shaped clear caps over them. The doll comes with tights.
Integrity produced this doll & FashionThey actually made two; Classic Jem first, and later Showtime Jem. The Showtime Jem seems like the closest fit for the first version of Jem, with the darker belt (looks dark pink on the cartoon rather than red), light tights & shoes, a darker bracelet and they even used the Jerrica face mold to give her a little more of the1st edition Jem doll closed-mouth look.

Jerrica, Original Outfit.
First appears in The Beginning and again in: Battle of the Bands.
After this point, we see the revised Jerrica doll outfit instead of this one.
Model sheet number JR-1
Hasbro produced this doll & fashion - more or less. The produced doll's outfit is white and blue with thinner stripes; as well a white belt and blue pumps. The general idea of the the mini dress with fringed belt, beret and pumps however is there. Jerrica never did rock the sunglasses in a big way like Clark Kent on the cartoon, but a pair was always included with her to alter her appearance more.
Integrity produced this doll & Fashion - more or less. Also a white and blue version like the 1st doll. So far Integrity has not made a blue and pink version of Jerrica's fashion.
Trivia
  • Barring Roxy's outfit, this is probably the least like the outfit that made it into doll form. Pink and blue instead of white and blue, much larger stripes, a hot pink sash and shoes, and the hat has a funny white "V" shaped thing on it.
  • Back to School for Jerrica, on Transformers! Thanks to Matthew Karpowich for sending along the model sheet reuse!
Pizzazz Original outfit
First appears in The Beginning and again in: Disaster, Kimber's Rebellion, Frame Up, Battle of the Bands.
After this point, we see the revised Pizzazz doll outfit instead of this one.
Model sheet number P-1
Hasbro produced this doll & fashion. The doll does not come with a bandanna around her leg, the doll's shoes are grey, and the leg warmer, in doll form, becomes a single sock. Her doll outfit isn't fringed either. Most of these changes are reflected in the produced doll as well.
Integrity produced this doll & FashionIntegrity chose to keep the black leg bandanna that we see in the very first episodes. Otherwise the outfit changes by episode 6 to look more like Integrity and Hasbro's produced dolls; neither company chose to go with the fringe, both companies decided a full sock rather than single leg warmer was a better choice. Integrity used make up based on the cartoon rather than Hasbro's doll (at least for her Classic version).
Roxy Original Outfit
First appears in The Beginning and again in: Disaster, Kimber's Rebellion, Frame Up, Battle of the Bands

After this point, we see the revised Roxy doll outfit instead of this one.
Model sheet number R-1. This was before Rio and Raya had to be differentiated, probably.
Hasbro produced this doll & fashion... sort of. One of the more obviously different designs compared to what was sold, the first episodes had Roxy in a black shirt and
tight red & green capris with black alphabet-looking designs. The doll came with a purple fringed top, no necklace, differently patterned pants, and a differently shaped belt. The shoes are also sandals- the doll came with yellow pumps.
Integrity produced this doll & FashionIntegrity opted to keep the shoes, necklace (chain though, rather than what seems to be black beads on the cartoon) black top and belt pattern from the very first Roxy, but did their own thing with her pants - vertically striped multicolour micro sequins.
Stormer Original Outfit
First appears in The Beginning and again in: Disaster, Kimber's Rebellion, Frame Up, Battle of the Bands, Starbright Part 1: Falling Star, Starbright Part 2: Colliding Stars, Starbright Part 3: Rising Star, The World Hunger Shindig, Adventure in China, In Stitches, The Music Awards Part 1, The Music Awards Part 2, The Rock Fashion Book, Broadway Magic, In Search of the Stolen Album, Hot Time in Hawaii, The Princess and the Singer, The Jem Jam Part 1, The Jem Jam Part 2, Culture Clash, Glitter and Gold, Scandal, The Bands Break Up, The Day the Music Died.
Model sheet number Unknown
Hasbro produced this doll & fashion. They pretty much got it right. The doll's shoes are magenta (or yellow), but other than that, pretty close! She loses the arm cuff after the first five episodes.
Integrity produced this doll & FashionThe cartoon, Hasbro doll and Integrity doll are all pretty close to one another. In typical Integrity fashion though, it looks like they couldn't resist giving us a memento of her first design - the arm cuff and the anklet.

Hasbro produced this doll & fashion. (maybe?) I can only imagine this must be Rio's "main" outfit, though it's not really anything like the produced fashion.
Integrity produced this doll & FashionIntegrity Toys decided to reproduce this understated fashion rather than the one that the Hasbro doll wore. He was given a blue duffel bag as well, rather than a briefcase, which actually kind of makes more sense for a roadie/tour manager, though I'm not sure if he had such a bag on the cartoon.

It is then replaced by her Purple Bathing Suit.

  • Jerrica's half doesn't appear until Frame Up.
  • It's also shown on a poster in the background of the Gettin' Down To Business video in Kimber's Rebellion.
