Doll Name Rock 'n Curl Jem
Stock # (US) #4002
Hasbro package contents listing 12 1/2" doll with stage fashion, earrings, 2 bracelets, pumps, hairpick, and microphone
Comments/Trivia
  • This was the budget Jem doll. No flashing earrings, no cassette or extra fashion. She is the easiest vintage doll to find nowadays.
  • She is the only doll from the Jem line that didn't come with a stand.
  • She is also the only produced simply "Jem", not Jem/Jerrica doll.
Produced VariantsSo far, I know of dolls marked on their backs with one of the following places of manufacture, and there are slight variations among them:
  • China
To learn more about these body types and slight differences, please see the body variations page.

12 1/2" doll: Caucasian doll with very long platinum blonde wavy hair, with a streak of cotton candy pink hair in the middle. Has earring holes.
  • She shares the same face mold as Glitter 'n Gold Jem and Flash 'n Sizzle Jem
  • Ironically, her hair is nearly impossible to style or comb, and today the curls are usually either combed out (a painstakingly long process) or matted and gnarled up. Even straight out of the box, it's nasty, imho!
  • She has a make up variant. They can have a lot more or less blue eyeshadow, the lip colour can vary from a pink to salmon hue.
  • There is also a variant where the blue in her eyeshadow is mint green.

stage fashion: Made up of 4 pieces itemized below.

stage fashion part 1, dress: One-shouldered minidress, velcros in back.  Dark purple spandex bodice with small silver fabric painted dots, attached silver ruffled mini skirt, hot pink stretch-lace bows -same material as the hairties she comes with- on shoulder and opposite hip.

stage fashion part 2, tights: Hot pink elasticized waist with silver tinsel threaded in a zig-zaggy pattern throughout.
  •  they are a bit brighter than Clash's tights. The size difference may just be related to stretching. (Compare)

stage fashion part 3, pink ribbon: Stretchy lace, hot pink, matches the bows on her dress.

stage fashion part 4, purple ribbon: ; Stretchy lace, purple.
  • I got a Rock 'n Curl Jem (loose, but otherwise complete) with a plum coloured ribbon, like those available in some Maxie sets. Not sure if she was packaged with it or not.

earrings: Hot pink plastic hoops.
  • There are various colours of these around, mostly from Maxie fashions.
  • Raya's earrings are the same style but gold (or in some cases yellow)
  • Some early prototype photos show all of the Holograms wearing this style of earrings.

bracelets: plastic zig-zags.
  • There are various colours of these around, mostly from Maxie fashions. Clash and Glitter 'n Gold Jem also got bracelets in this shape, but "chromed" and in different colours.

pumps: Fluorescent Pink, usually thin, but sometimes thick, scalloped edges.
  • Looks like the same as colour as 2nd Edition Aja's.
  • My Canadian doll came with one thick and one thin sided shoe 9_9.
  • Jem had several versions of hot pink scalloped shoes, and they are very difficult to differentiate, so be sure to check the shoe guide for more information!
hairpick: light mauve pink

microphone:  Mauve handheld mic.

Box, liner and inserts not previously noted in Hasbro's box contents above. *not all fashions came with the same posters and inserts, this is a listing of what I got personally with the doll listed on this page.
Box; 2nd year rectangular box, no illustration on front, photos of Rock 'n Curl Jem on sides and back.
Box liner: Hot-pink (see more on Box Liners)
  • Have also seen it in purple (much rarer)

MTV Offer
My US one didn't, but Rock 'n Curl Jem can also come with Instructions. (flipside in French)

Packaging Variants: A listing of the packaging that Rock 'n Curl Jem can be found in, that I know of, so far! You may also find it interesting to find out what "H-22", "H-32", and "H-44" means. Anything in Italics I haven't actually seen but have good reason to believe exists. If you have any photos or information/corrections to share, I'd love to hear about it!

Source Differences from produced doll (if any)
Hasbro catalogues Rock 'n Curl Jem models Rhythm & Flash in the 1987 US Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogue and 1987 France/UK Toy Fair Catalogue
  • Again, just the darker eyebrows and more teeth showing, otherwise she looks like the produced doll.
The Rock Backstager page in the 1987 US Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogue show a different Rock 'n Curl Jem:
  • Significantly shorter hair, which looks to be a silkier texture
  • Much larger silver spots on her dress. # Make up isn't as dark, less teeth showing- makes her look more like the produced doll in that respect
  • The bracelets she wears are much thinner and shinier zig zags
Hasbro 1987 France/UK Toy Fair Catalogue (French Shown).
  • Make up is darker, and the "teeth" are showing more than on the produced doll
  • The bracelets she wears are much thinner and shinier zig zags
  • Her tights are bright pink waffle-weave tights (not zig-zag tinsel tights)
Rock 'n Curl Box Photo Rock 'n Curl Jem on her box back and sides (the same photo that's used  in the 1987 US Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogue and the 2nd year catalogue poster)
  • Like the other 1987 Jem/Jerrica dolls, her make up (particularly eyebrows) are rather dark compared to those produced, the white of the teeth is a bit wider too (the lipstick isn't on the "teeth" at all, like it is on the doll) otherwise the make up is essentially the same.
  • The bracelets she wears are much thinner and shinier zig zags
The Show Me the Way Playset box (same photo is the 1987 US Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogue)
  • Significantly shorter hair, which looks to be a silkier texture
  • Makeup shows darker eyebrows and more teeth showing
  • She's not wearing earrings
The Love is Here and It's Workin' Out playsets (same photos are in the 1987 US Hasbro Toy Fair Catalogue) Like the other 1987 Jem/Jerrica dolls, her make up (particularly eyebrows) are rather dark compared to those produced, the white of the teeth is a bit wider too (the lipstick isn't on the "teeth" at all, like it is on the doll) otherwise the make up is essentially the same.

Illustrations: Cartoon  Differs from the produced version, in that the tights have silver dots and not the bodice of the dress. She is also not shown with any hair ribbons or bracelets. Her shoes are also purple, not hot pink. As usual, the cartoon's hair and make up is much more extreme than the produced doll. The earrings on the show are the usual Jemstar earrings, not hoops.
